Drivers are “ripping it” on the roads, according to the OPP.

Ontario Provincial Police laid 86 street-racing charges and 28 impaired-driving charges in the Greater Toronto Area from April 20 to 27.

Most of the street-racing charges were males between the ages of 18 to 25 and the majority of impaired charges were males aged 35 to 50.

“Street-racing numbers may be up a bit but not by a huge amount,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said.

Street racing starts at 150 km/h, but one driver charged was driving 214 km/h.

“It’s disappointing to see it happen over and over again,” Schmidt said.

“People are out there ripping it.”

This is at a time when people are being asked to remain home.

“There is no mandate for people to have to stay home. You are allowed to go for a drive wherever and whenever you want,” Schmidt said.
