What it’s like to travel into New York City right now

Jill Bannister, 53, a home care nurse from Irvington, NY, takes the Metro-North into Grand Central Terminal every day.

There’s something of an unspoken code on the train between the few passengers still going into the city. We space ourselves out — there’s usually just four of five people per car.

Everyone looks a little frightened behind their masks. It’s because you can only see people’s eyes. I sometimes feel like saying: “Hi, I’m smiling behind this thing.”

Every now and again, someone on board will forget to wear their mask and a conductor will make an announcement: “I’m seeing people with their masks down on their chin. You gotta have it on, you know.”

Other things remain the same, like there’s always one person who talks too loudly on the phone. And Metro-North doesn’t officially have designated quiet cars anymore since every car has turned into the quiet car.

When I get into Grand Central, it feels quite eerie because it’s just so empty. One nice thing is the huge American flag hanging in the main hall. Some people are finding their way into the station to take photos of it so that feels like a bit of normalcy.
